KCET’s 23rd Fine Cut Festival of Films Announces Student Finalists, Industry Judges

KCET, the Los Angeles public broadcaster, announced the student finalists and eight industry judges who will take part of the 23rd Fine Cut Festival of Films. The festival will broadcast as a series of six one-hour episodes starting Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 10 p.m. on KCET in Southern California and on Thursday, Sept. 22 at 11 p.m. ET/PT on Link TV nationwide.

The American Pavilion announced today the 2022 program of its Emerging Filmmaker Showcase at the upcoming 2022 Cannes Film Festival. The films in the Emerging Filmmaker Showcase focus on themes as diverse as the meaning of community, gender identity, the COVID-19 epidemic, self-perceptions and representation, the holocaust, the development and evolution cultural identity, family dynamics, the quest for love, and more.

What are the stories you’re motivated to tell, and what’s your mission as a storyteller?

Thematically, I definitely want to tell stories about women. I will always be making very emotional, female coming-of-age films. Stories about women reaching new stages of growth. 

 
 

Film Fest Report

The Cannes Film Festival is a great place to discover new talents: gems can be found in competition, at special screenings, in the festival’s parallel sections, as well as at emerging filmmakers’ showcases. Chinese-American filmmaker Kay Niuyue Zhang presented her DGA Student Film Award Winning short Mother in the Mist at the American Pavillion, where it swept another award.

The first sequence of writer/director Niuyue Kay Zhang’s Mother in the Mist involves a young girl calling out for her mother on a rural road shrouded in a blanket of mist. There’s no response other than the lonely echo of her query. This introduction sets the stage for a short film that is missing none of the poignancy of high-quality feature-length dramas.

Mother in the Mist: The Sting Of Sorrow Amidst Disaster.

Niuyue Kay Zhang’s tale of tenderness and perseverance in the face of a snowballing disaster, Mother in the Mist is set in Wuhan, just as lockdowns began to be imposed in the initial days. It follows Zhao, a new mother who has yet to see the daughter she gave birth to, and Snowie, a little girl fighting her own way to the heart of the catastrophic epidemic in the hope of seeing her mother.
